NEPGA Pro/Pro Summary

Tri Champions Crowned at 2009 NEPGA Pro-Pro Stroke Play Championship, Mt. Pleasant CC • July 13, 2009

A full day of sunshine and warm weather in New England has been hard to come by. Fortunately for the 108 players at the 2009 NEPGA Pro-Pro Stroke Play Championship, both were in abundance on Monday. The beautiful weather and light winds made for low scores, resulting in a 3-way tie for the lead at the end of the day. Hailing out of Black Rock Country Club, the team of Evan Belcher and Brian Spitz took the first round lead, with a first round low 8-under, 64, thanks in large part to the 9 birdies Spitz had on his own ball. Belcher was no slouch himself, making 5 birdies in round 2, to help with a team score of 5-under, 67 in round 2, posting a total score of 13-under, 131 for the tournament. Also carding a 131 was the team of Paul Parajeckas out of Pleasant Valley Country Club, and Greg Yeomans out of the Bay Club at Mattapoisett. The team carded sixteen total birdies, split evenly amongst them, with a 65 in round 1, and a 66 in round 2. Were it not for a bogey on the final hole of the day, Parajeckas & Yeomans would have won the title outright. The team of Troy Pare, from the Wannamoisett Country Club, and Scott Spence from the Carnegie Abbey Club carded a second round 64, to go with a first round 67. The first round was highlighted by Pare's eagle on the Par 5, 14th hole. The second round medalist honors included birdies on six of the last seven holes, propelling them into the three-way tie for the Championship. A big thank you goes out to the Mt. Pleasant Country Club Food and Beverage staff, who provided a phenomenal lunch in between rounds. Also, we would like to acknowledge Mt. Pleasant Head Professional Matt Walsh, PGA, and his golf staff for their help in managing the logistics of the event. Todd Sauer, GCSAA and his crew did an outstanding job in preparing the course, giving most everyone a chance to get a sneak peek at the layout prior to next month's NEPGA Professional Championship.

NEPGA Pro/Pro Stroke Play

Evan Belcher and I tied for first place with two other teams in the NEPGA pro/pro at Mount Pleasant CC on Monday. We shot 64 - 67 = 131 (13 under). In the first round, I had nine birdies on my own ball. I birdied numbers 1, 3, 4, 9, 11, 13, 14, 16, and 17. In the second round, I slowed down with only two birdies and Evan picked up 5 birdies. We had three bogeys which took us from running away with the win to tying for first. It was fun to make all those birdies.
